Pea season update by Tim Mudge, Commercial Manager at British Growers Association.
Weather having an impact at both ends of the scale. Warm
dry weather has caused problems in England, compounded by issues at
some processing sites, meaning crops have been bypassed. Groups are
between 30% and 60% through their crops. In Scotland cold wet
weather has delayed things. Around Dundee only 8% through and
stopped by cold wet weather. On the borders about 22% through but
they had an inch of rain at the weekend.
Overall quality seems to be OK but some mixed maturity is
causing concern. Reports on the quality and potential yield
of later crops vary across the piece. There are concerns
about the amount of area passed and the whether yields will hold up
to make up the difference on contracts. Once again the weather in
the next 10 - 14 days will be crucial.
